Types of Retailing
Meyer classifies retailing based on five criteria, namely the type of ownership, products or services sold, non-store retailing, pricing strategies, and location. Each type of retailing will be discussed briefly in the following sections.
Service Retailing and Product Retailing
1. Service Retailing
There are three types of retailing services, which is rented-goods services, service-goods owned and non-goods services.
Rented-Goods Service
In this type, the customers renting and using certain products. For example car rental, carpet cleaner, videotapes, laser discs, and apartments. In this case a physical product at some cost rental for a specific time period. Consumers can use the product but ownership remains at the retailer.
Owned Goods Service
In-owned goods services, products owned by the consumers repair, improve or develop work performance, or maintained / cared for. Owned-goods services also include changes in product forms that have been owned by the customer. Examples are: service repairs (watches, cars, motorcycles, computers, etc.), car washes, dry cleaning grass golf course maintenance, park maintenance, and others.
Non-Goods Service
Special characteristics of this type is the personal service that is intangible (not in the form of physical products) offered to consumers. Example babysitter, chauffeur, tutor, tour guide, barbers, beauticians, and others.
2. Product Retailing
Product retailing consists of several types, among them are:
Department stores – Department Stores
United States Department of Commerce defines a department store as a retail company that employs at least 25 people and had sales of clothing and household goods of 20 percent or more of its total sales. Specialty Store

Food and Drug Retailer
